Vanguard just released their new How America Saves 2025 report.
Here’s the link if you want to see the full thing:
These are the actual average and median 401(k) balances from the report:
| Age | Average Balance | Median Balance |
|---|---|---|
| Under 25 | $6,899 | $1,948 |
| 25–34 | $42,640 | $16,255 |
| 35–44 | $103,552 | $39,958 |
| 45–54 | $188,643 | $67,796 |
| 55–64 | $271,320 | $95,642 |
| 65+ | $299,442 | $95,425 |
These numbers are way too low for what retirement actually costs.
The median (the right) is the most honest number, because it shows what the typical American has. For example:
-
The typical 65-year-old only has $95,425 saved.
-
Withdraw that safely at 3.5% to 5.5%, and it only gives you around:
-
$3,300 to $5,200 per year to live on.
-
That’s not retirement money. That’s grocery money.
We don’t want anyone in this company stranded later in life. We want you to retire with dignity and choices, not stress.
We don’t want anyone here ending up in that situation. Remember: we offer a company 401(k). Once you’ve been employed for one year, you can start contributing.
