WHITE CITY – A new highway roundabout at the intersection of Oregon 140 and Foothill/Atlantic Avenue is open to traffic, about two miles east of White City.
The roundabout provides a new connection to Foothill Road and Atlantic Avenue. Jackson County recently completed an extension of Foothill Road north across Corey Road to Oregon 140.
To the east, the Oregon 140 and Kershaw Road intersection will be changed beginning tonight. A new center median will prevent vehicles from crossing the highway at that location, the site of serious injury and fatal crashes. Traffic will still be allowed to make right and left turns from the highway onto Kershaw Road.
Safety studies show roundabouts reduce fatalities by 90 percent and are safer than traffic signals on high speed-rural highway intersections, such as what’s found on Oregon 140. Roundabouts on state highways are also constructed to handle the largest legal freight trucks on the road.
Drivers should slow down when approaching a roundabout and yield to traffic inside the roundabout. They should also yield to pedestrians, just like at a regular intersection.
This roundabout is the sixth on a state highway in Oregon and the first in southern Oregon.
