We have had a rash of the same mistakes with our hiring of newly graduated driver program. There is an old saying, “Look more in your mirrors then out the windshield.” I know that sounds odd but it’s a good idea. It’s easy to point the truck where your headed with a glance for safety. But you must watch your mirrors to see where your footprint is taking you.
We keep hitting gates as an example. If you’re watching your mirrors. You would see the trailer cutting over to get it. New drivers do take a while to get the feel for where their trailer is tracking. It will come to you. After a while you will feel it more than know. It will come naturally. Until it does. Slow down and watch your mirrors.
