It is the driver’s responsibility to know the safety and operational conditions of their truck. The driver must ensure that they have performed and documented the results of the pre-trip and post-trip inspections in the Driver’s Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR). The DVIR book must be kept readily accessible in each truck. Place the book on the dash when the truck is parked in the yard. Every truck is to have a DVIR book in their vehicle, and is to be accessible in the event of a roadside inspection.
Completing pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections is not only company policy—it is the law. All drivers should be filling out a DVIR at the beginning and end of every shift. This DVIR must be turned in to the shop so necessary repairs can be made. The FMCSA regulation for equipment and inspection is 49 CFR 392.7.
Federal regulations also require that drivers review and sign off on the previous driver’s inspection report after completing their pre-trip inspection, provided that certification exists confirming that any required repairs have been completed. The FMCSA regulation for Driver inspection is 49 CFR 396.13.
