Terriers: The Real Rodent Killers

Here’s a quick bit of animal info I thought was pretty cool.

A lot of people think cats are the best mousers. And to be fair, cats are good hunters — but only when something runs right in front of them. Cats hunt by sight and movement. If they don’t see the mouse, they don’t go looking for it. They’re “opportunity hunters.”

And when cats do catch a mouse, they usually bat it around and play with it before finishing the job. That looks cool, but mice can escape during that little game.

Now let’s talk terriers — which are dogs, not cats — and they were bred for one job: wipe out rodents completely.

Terriers don’t sit around waiting to see something move. They hunt by scent. They track tunnels, follow trails, dig into holes, and go straight for the nest, not just the one mouse that shows itself. They clear out the whole problem, not part of it.

And unlike cats, terriers don’t play with their catch. They hit fast, grab low, and break the neck instantly. No games, no second chances, no escape.

Cats hunt when the opportunity shows up.
Terriers hunt until the mission is finished.

Just a fun bit of animal history — interesting how certain dog breeds are still elite at the jobs they were designed for.
