As you all know, George, Trace, and I met with the leaders of Southcoast Lumber on Wednesday. This is a normal part of my job. I like to communicate with our customers, and this was our first face-to-face meeting since we started this deal with them.
It started out well. Like normal, they told me things were going well. Our guys communicate well. They are getting the equipment they need. We are doing the job we promised.
Then they said, “Except…”
They are worried about our safety.
I have been in lots of these meetings. I am very used to being told we are doing a good job. We have very good supervisors, so I’m used to being told things are on time and done correctly. But in my 35 years of doing this, I have NEVER been told that anyone is worried about our safety.
It was very uncomfortable.
As I thought about it, I knew they were correct, and we need to fix it. This includes loads shifting. A load that moves in transit was not secured correctly at the beginning of the journey. Please secure your loads as safely as possible.
Side note: If you are hauling a weather-protected load, put your tarps on top of the load. Just in case you run into a freak storm, you can stop and tarp it en route.
Going forward, drive safe. Let’s be known for our safety, not the lack of it.
