We have had quite a few load shifts recently. Proper cargo securement is important for the safety of our drivers and everyone on the road. Before leaving the loading site, make sure straps are placed correctly, pulled tight, and able to keep the load from moving.
Securement must be checked:
- Before leaving the loading site
- Within the first 50 miles
- Every 3 hours or 150 miles, whichever comes first
- Every time your duty status changes
If there is a securement problem, remember STOP – ASSESS – CORRECT – REPORT.
STOP: Stop when the load creates an unsafe condition.
ASSESS: Determine what changed and whether you can safely fix it.
CORRECT: Make the necessary adjustments before continuing.
REPORT: Contact management if the problem cannot be safely corrected.
Never leave a securement problem for someone else. If you find an issue, correct it immediately. A few extra minutes can prevent a load shift, damaged cargo, or a serious accident.
