Remember that your pre-trip inspection should include, but not be limited to:
- Checking your fluids, including oil, DEF, and coolant.
- Thumping your tires with a hammer or tire bar—don’t kick them.
- Adjusting your brakes when needed.
- Checking your wheels to make sure all lug nuts are present and tight.
- Making sure your air gauge and low-air warning alarm are working properly.
- Verifying that you have all required vehicle paperwork, including your insurance and registration.
- Making sure you have all of your load securement equipment, including wrappers and binders or straps, as well as a bar to tighten them.
The drivers who have the fewest flat or blown tires are the ones who check their tires multiple times throughout the day.
If you’re paid hourly, you’re given 15 minutes each day to complete your pre-trip and post-trip inspections. This isn’t just part of your job—it’s also the law.
