Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family, share a delicious meal, and reflect on our blessings. But have you ever wondered why we celebrate this holiday? The American Founding Fathers thought Thanksgiving was important because it gave everyone a chance to pause and give thanks for the good things in life.
In 1789, President George Washington declared the first national Thanksgiving Day. He wanted people to thank God for the country’s independence and the new Constitution. He believed it was a day to show gratitude for peace, safety, and freedom. Years later, President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official holiday in 1863 during the Civil War. He encouraged Americans to come together, even in hard times, to be grateful and hopeful for a better future.
Thanksgiving reminds us of the importance of gratitude, unity, and appreciating the blessings we enjoy every day.
